Beer Review: Sam Adams Utopias

$200 bottle of beer? That’s crazy, right?? Maybe not. I was given the chance to buy into a bottle of Utopias with some great beer friends and it was one of the best beer experiences I’ve had to date. Going in, we knew that this was not like a typical beer. It’s flat and almost 30% abv. Here’s what Sam Adams has to say about it:

Samuel Adams® Utopias® actually began with our first experiments with aging and blending in barrels with the creation of Triple Bock® followed by Millenium®. It was with these brews that we began testing aging beer in barrels from various origins like bourbon, port, and cognac to discover each of their flavor contributions. Inspired by whiskey makers, we took the barrel aging process for Utopias® to another level by utilizing a variety of barrels and blending different vintages to create a truly unique taste experience.

Appearance: Pours clear, deep copper with no head (none expected). Upon swirling, you can see how high the abv is, it looks like a glass of cognac.

Aroma: Right away the alcohol hits you. Lots of alcohol and caramel. Comments were port, sherry, bourbon and all are correct. This beer is a trip, it evolves the entire time it’s drank. The most persistent aromas were fruit, wood and sweet malt.

Taste: Wow…so many flavors all competing with no one really overpowering. Caramel, intense maltiness, alcohol, lots of wood, fruit, toffee, spice. Each sip is different from the last, making this a roller coaster to sip on. Sometimes the wood and caramel take the front with fruit lingering on the finish and other times it’s all liquor with a spicy finish. This beer is a fun ride.

Mouthfeel: Sips like a scotch, very warm and full bodied without being cloying. It’s interesting, for as high as the abv is, and the obvious alcohol, there is no burn. This is one of the smoothest things I’ve ever put in my mouth.

Overall: This is one of those beers that all beer geeks have to experience. It’s not something I would drink every day or share with folks that aren’t into extreme beer, but I will probably always keep a bottle on hand for special occasion with extraordinary people.
